![]() I am so worried for this summer, hes going to be 9 this year and has arthritis in his hips so can't clean his behind, so I have to do it for him! Lol Im going to invest in a mosketo (cant spell) net and cut it over his hutch so hopefully that will minimise the flys too. ![]() He stayed there for the whole day and luckily the vet got rid of them all and she said that it would of just happened, we got some rear guard that we put on and some anti botics and hes fine now. How Serious Is Flystrike in Chickens First of all, flystrike doesnt just affect chickens. Luckily the vet is down the bottom of my road so I saw the vet nurse turn up at 7:30 and rushed him down there where they shaved off the hair around his bum and then soaked and pluked the maggots out. So all night we were up getting the maggots out of his bum. I’ll keep everyone updated, hoping this dude pulls through, he’s a fighter for sure.I really hope the chicken is okay now! My rabbit got fly strike last year, we managed to get as many out as possible and spoke to the emergency vet on the phone and he said that it must of just happened and to try get as many out as possible and if it got worse then to take him up there. You may find that the maggots will thrash about in the saline bath. Change the saline solution a couple of times. This will give the wound an initial cleaning and will drown many of the maggots. become more friendly, more flighty, lethargic, etc.) that is a HUGE sign that something is wrong. Sit hen in bowl of warm saline and keep her in it for 10 -15 minutes. Unfortunately Django has never been friendly, he came to my yard from a neighbors where we think he was used for fighting. And always make sure you’re checking your flock regularly so that you can catch it quickly if it does occur. Keep your chickens in good health, and feed probiotics to prevent digestive issues. Try to control your fly population if you can, using traps or fly predators. Django has never been a big fan of dust baths, so I think that’s part of his problem. How can fly strike be prevented? First and foremost, cleanliness and good hygiene. I’m now paranoid and have checked all the other chickens and rabbits, and will be watching closely to try and prevent this happening again. I can still feel maggots crawling on my skin, even though I’ve killed them all and taken a long shower. Only time will tell if he will make it or recover fully. I gave him fresh food and water with ACV as a probiotic, as well as sat some yogurt, oats, and BOSS in a small cup for him to encourage him to eat more. I also hung sticky tape next to his cage to catch any indoor flies. I doused him in a couple drops of diluted tea tree oil in hopes that it will keep any flies that may sneak in away from him. Individual animals showing signs of toxaemia should be treated with antibiotics (procaine penicillin, or oxytetracycline). He is now inside, where I can control his fly exposure, in the infirmary (aka my spare bathroom). Also please note that I am NOT a vet, I only have veterinary experience, you should always consult a professional before administering any medications or injections. I will continue this course of antibiotics for 3-5 days depending on how he does. I used 18 gauge needles and he didn’t budge. Make sure when injecting penicillin to pull back the plunger once it’s under the skin and ensure that there is no blood, if you give it into their vein you can kill them almost instantly. I estimated him to be around 5lbs, so I gave 0.5cc. Rule of thumb is 0.1cc for every 1lb of body weight. – For penicillin, I would typically inject in the breast, however he has gotten quite thin, presumably from the strike, so I injected in his right thigh – tomorrow I will give it in his left. After his final rinse, I sprayed Blue Kote on the affected area and gave him a shot of penicillin. Once that soak was done, I gave him a final rinse. ![]() Once his iodine soak was done, I rinsed him and re-filled the tote with luke-warm water and epsom salt, and then soaked him for another 15 minutes.
